Schools in Kotdwar: CBSE, ICSE and State Board List
Kotdwar has well over a hundred schools, from small play schools in a single building to large inter colleges that have been running for decades. If you're new to town, or your child is moving up from primary, the choice can feel overwhelming.
We won't pretend to rank schools on a website. Results, teachers and fees change every year. What we can do is help you shortlist sensibly and check the facts yourself.
The three kinds of school you'll find
- Private English-medium schools. Most "public schools" in Kotdwar fall here. Many are CBSE affiliated, and a few follow ICSE.
- Government inter colleges (GIC, GGIC). Run by the state and following the Uttarakhand Board (UBSE). Fees are minimal, and some have strong results in science.
- Traditional and gurukul schools. Like the Vedic Ashram Gurukula Mahavidyalaya near Kanvashram, which teaches Sanskrit and Vedic studies.

How to check a school's board
Every school says it's "affiliated". Take two minutes to check:
- CBSE: search the school name on the CBSE affiliation portal (saras.cbseaff.nic.in). Note the affiliation number and up to which class it's valid.
- ICSE/ISC: check the CISCE website's school list.
- Uttarakhand Board: ask for the recognition letter. Government inter colleges are UBSE by default.
If a school can't show you its affiliation number, ask why.
When admissions happen
| Month | What happens |
|---|---|
| December to February | Most private schools open admission forms for the next session |
| February to March | Interactions, entrance tests for higher classes, fee deposits |
| April | New session starts in most schools |
| June to July | Late admissions, mostly for transfers |
The 25% RTE seats in private schools for economically weaker families are applied for online through the state portal, usually early in the year. Watch for the notice.
Questions to ask on your visit
- What is the student to teacher ratio in my child's class?
- Is there a school bus to our mohalla, and what does it cost?
- Which subjects are available in Class 11, and are there enough science seats?
- What were last year's board results, as a pass percentage, not just the toppers?
- What does the fee include, and are there extra charges for books, uniform, transport or activities?
Talk to two or three parents at the gate at dispersal time too. You'll learn more in ten minutes there than from any brochure.
