The region was ruled by the Mauryan Empire under Ashoka, then the Katyuri dynasty and the Panwar kings of Garhwal. The Gorkhas held it for about 12 years before the British took over. The British connected Kotdwar by rail in 1890, mainly to carry timber down from Garhwal, and the first passenger train ran in 1901. Kotdwar station is one of the older railway stations in India.
Kanvashram: where Bharat got its name
About 14 km from the city, on the bank of the Malini river, is Kanvashram, the ashram of sage Kanva. In the Mahabharata story, Shakuntala grew up here and married King Dushyanta. Their son Bharata is the king after whom India is called Bharatavarsha. The valley is known as Kanvaghati.
